UD Almeria could not have begun the new season for new coach Gonzalo Arconada in any better way than with an emphatic 3-1 away win.
It was a day for the “new boys” on the block. As was the case last season, poor defence at set pieces cost Athletic Bilbao dearly. Hernan Pellerano, in his first match for Almeria, opened the scoring for the visitors in the seventh minute when he took a free kick from Ortiz on his head and coolly headed it past goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz.
With only thirty minutes played Almeria’s top scorer of last season Negredo capitalised on a defensive blunder and slid the ball past the goalkeeper Iraizoz.
Juanma Ortiz made it 3-0 just after the break. Ion Velez reduced the deficit six minutes later. When Bilbao were awarded a penalty in the sixty seventh minute it appeared as though they were going to make a dramatic comeback but Francisco Yeste fired his shot too close to goalkeeper Diego Alves.
